My Top 20 Songs of 2020

It’s no secret that music is one of the most important mood boosters. Although it’s not a living necessity, it is pretty important for our personal pleasures. With whatever we go through, music always seems to be there to lift us up when no one else is around. This was crucial especially for this year.

Lots of new music surfaced in 2020 in all genres. The app TikTok made plenty of interesting songs shift more towards the popular side, as pop continued to be considered mainstream. However, as you keep hearing the same song over and over again on your phone or even department stores, they get extremely overplayed. So hopefully your favorite songs did not become super repetitive to you this year, but if it did, that leaves the door wide open to dive into some new music that will have a clean slate in your eyes. I personally love finding new music and digging into different genres that I would usually listen to. For example, I usually only listen to 70’s through 90’s rock, but this year gave me a run for my money as country became one of my favorites. My dad is a strong believer that you have to listen to pure country music like Shania Twain or Kenny Rodgers, and he was not wrong at all, but that didn’t stop us from finding an amazing new artist like Kacey Musgraves who had an amazing album put out in 2018 titled Golden Hour. Also finding artists like Jenny Lewis who has an incredible soft voice in her 2019 album On the Line, and even being reintroduced to the former One Direction member, Harry Styles, who put out an incredible pop rock album, Fine Line, at the end of 2019 which completely shifted my perspective on the artist as I saw such more vulnerability in his music than I ever would have expected, which I personally love. However, as much as I found new artists with different genres, rock music still reigned supreme in my eyes in 2020. I am 100% an old soul, I prefer to listen to my parents music that they grew up with rather than the regular popstars of today, so sticking to classic rock was no question as that is what I have been listening to since I was a little child.

In my top 20 songs of 2020 playlist, you’'ll notice not very many songs are actually from 2020. As I said before, lots of new music surfaced, however not a lot was my favorite. The newer artists I have in here include The Pretty Reckless which have been one of my favorite bands since middle school, Falling in Reverse (which is my favorite emo band so it is an acquired tastes), and the artists I mentioned before. I love the timeless sound of Fleetwood Mac, Joni Mitchell, and of course the boss Bruce Springsteen, that music never goes out of style and will be listened to for ages. Also, it’s noticeable how I listen to lot’s of slow music. Hearing raw emotion and pure vulnerability is my absolute favorite thing in music, it connects you to the artists and allows you to feel almost a bond with the musicians as they take you into their head and their world. I do listen to hard rock quite a bit, very odd thing about me, but I love when artists scream and get extremely powerful that you hear cracks in their voice and becomes raspy almost, however with this year, I usually went for a slower tempo to fit my mood, which was on the downer side some of the time, which is okay, we all have that year.

I hope you all find this playlist interesting, and if it’s not your style, open your mind up to new genres, trust me you won’t regret it. Listen to the playlist on Spotify, and happy new year!
