The Return of Flare Pants

Flare pants, you either love or hate them, but it seems that more and more people are starting to hop on the flare bandwagon each day. For a while, skinny jeans ruled everyones lives as it was the best go-to option, and then all of a sudden, 90’s mom jeans rained on its parade. Men and women started adapting to the more comfortable, loose fit look with mom jeans as skinny jeans were getting pushed out of the way a bit more. But now, an old throwback is taking everyone for a wild turn. Flare jeans. With the skinny fit at the top and instant wide flare starting just below the knee, individuals started to gravitate towards this 60’s trend out of the blue.

During the 1960’s, the most iconic celebrities were putting these flare styled pants straight into the spotlight. With legends like Cher, Mick Jagger, Twiggy, and Jimi Hendrix, flare jeans were a regular addition to the typical wardrobe as everyone saw them as the trend in the day. These pants were brought into the 70’s when even more icons brought them attention, up until the 1980’s when skinny jeans were brought into the picture once again. For what everyone thought was the end of flare jeans, the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s were dominated by skinny jeans, the rise of tight leather pants were also brought in (which ironically is also back in fashion these days).

Fast forward to about 2018, celebrities street style started becoming a bit more vintage. Flare jeans, all of a sudden, were back. More and more individuals are ditching their basic straight leg denim and opting out for a more loose fit flare style. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the regular pair of skinny jeans, but this return of the 60’s/70’s statement piece is what my old soul has been waiting for.

So we know flares are back in, but how exactly are we supposed to style them? Allow me. Flares go perfect with a basic sweater half-tucked in the front with a belt to tie it all together. Not only sweaters, but graphic tees, crop tops, tanks, and even bodysuits, all go with these statement pants and there is no room to go wrong. I personally think if you pair these bottoms with a looser, longer top, it is a better idea to tuck it in rather than just leave it hanging. Sometimes two baggy pieces have the power to take over and make the look appear more frumpy than normal, so a quick tuck holds lot’s of power. Shoe wise, you can’t go wrong. Booties with a chunky heel and wedges go beautifully with these pants to add some height to your legs as the flare leg typically accentuate the look of long legs. However, heels are not the only way to go here, sneakers also look amazing with the bottoms. I personally think classic vans look best, but anything goes.

With so many stores hopping on this trend, options are endless to find your perfect pair of flares. From stores like Free People, Madewell, and Altar’d State, there are so many shops with different choices to choose from. Here are some of my personal favorites that you can add to your denim drawer at home!

We are absolutely positive this trend will stick around for a very long time. So hold on, because flare jeans are not going anywhere anytime soon. Check out these amazing jeans above and let us know what you think of this fashion comeback!
